UIF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
About the UIF unemployment benefits
When your employer terminates your service, you can apply to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) for benefits.
How do you know if you qualify?
Criteria:
- The benefits are only available to you if you have been contributing to the UIF while you worked. Both you and your employer must have contributed 1% of your salary each month to the UIF.
- You cannot claim if you have resigned, been suspended or absconded from work.
- You may claim if the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) considers the resignation as a constructive dismissal.
How do I qualify to claim UIF benefits?
To qualify for benefits, you must register as a work seeker.
You must apply for the UIF benefits as soon as you become unemployed or within six months of the termination of your employment (e.g., birth of a child, death of a contributor).
How will you be paid?
The Umenployment Insurance Fund (UIF) will pay the UIF benefit by electronic deposit into your bank account (the bank may charge you for the service)
When will your UIF benefit lapse?
The UIF benefit will lapse when you:
- Pass away (death).
- Become re-employed.
- Do not sign monthly in the register (online or in person at the UIF office) for your UIF benefit.
- Credit Exhaustion: The duration of payments depends on the credits you accumulated. For every four days worked, you accumulate one credit day of benefits. Benefits can be paid for a maximum of 365 days (approximately 12 months) within a four-year period, provided you have enough credits.
What you should do
- Before you apply (Required documents):
- ID: 13-digit bar-coded identity document (ID) or passport
- Payslips: Proof of of employment with your last couple of payslips/payment advices.
- UI19 Form: Filled out by your previous employer.
- Service Certificate: From your previous employer.
- UI-2.8 Form: For banking details, signed by your bank with a stamped bank statement.
- ESSA Jobseeker Registration Form: Complete the prescribed form at the Labour Centre or online.
What if your application is not approved?
- If your UIF application isn't approved, first understand the rejection reason (often missing info or non-compliance) and try to correct it.
- If you disagree with the decision, complete the UI-12 Notice of Appeal Form and send it to the Regional Appeals Committee.
How long does it take
- The UIF application process in South Africa typically takes 4-6 weeks for initial processing and approval, with the first payment arriving 2-4 weeks after approval/first signing, but delays are common due to incomplete records, with some waiting up to a few months; ensuring your employer updated your details beforehand is crucial for faster processing.
- After approval, subsequent payments often follow within 7-15 days after you sign the unemployment register every four weeks.
How much does it cost
The UIF application is free. We, however, charge a service fee of R460.00 (incl VAT) to assist with the application.
